Create an investment bridge in a South African province

SIAT: The expert advice, assisting businesses to raise capital by providing focused information and user-friendly support

The south african SIAT - Specialised Investment Advisory Team is an entity operating under EDTEA (Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs), created to address the lack of funding of the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) province investment projects. EDTEA realized that KZN businesses were not accessing national development funding in proportion to the province’s contribution to the country’s GDP and relatively to its potential growth. This exacerbated problems such as the high unemployment in the province.

To facilitate

Hence, SIAT was created with the objective to support KZN businesses, entrepreneurs and catalytic projects to access funding in order to promote employment in the province and enhance the competitiveness of its economy (by promoting, enabling and facilitating businesses to apply to funds), and also with the objective to assist the Office of the Head of Department in strategic activities and projects, by advising on organizational dynamics and change management, deal making and deal packaging. SIAT does not provide capital or debt financing to companies, rather facilitates the process through which firms can access funds from provincial and national development finance institutions (DFIs), international organizations and other specialized firms. SIAT is basically a bridge between businesses and funds, acting as a facilitator.

Leade in financing

Leadership Business Consulting accompanied the process from the very start, helping EDTEA to idealize, develop and implement SIAT, which involved varied steps, from the website’s creation (http://www.siatkzn.co.za/ – which as an online funding simulator tool) to setting the headquarters/office in Durban. The communication plan, for example, included the creation of awareness and the market’s development: by expanding SIAT’s scope and increasing its opportunities through communication activities directed to specific target audiences, including the media; to grow, encourage and form partnerships that support SIAT’s activities as business advisor (especially in finance/funding), to position SIAT as a top performer, being recognized as such, and a national leader in grant advising, fomenting similar initiatives on a national level. This project started by the end of 2015 and was ongoing in 2016.
